The rapid spread of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that provide instant answers to questions is reshaping how children learn and think. While speed is convenient, this culture of immediacy can limit children’s ability to develop critical thinking skills, creativity and self-awareness. When answers are provided in seconds, children may reflect less, question less and become more dependent on external systems rather than strengthening their own reasoning abilities.
Beyond general questions, children are also seeking answers to emotional dilemmas. Today’s rapidly changing world presents children with continual stressors, and many young people lack adequate access to emotional support. Academic pressure, social comparison and digital overload can contribute to this emotional strain. Not all children feel able to confide in parents or teachers, creating a gap in access to confidential, developmentally appropriate emotional support.
AI Coach for Children is a platform-based digital coaching companion designed to support children’s psychological and cognitive development. Unlike conventional AI systems that prioritize delivering answers, this solution is designed not to provide direct solutions but to guide children through reflective dialogue. The focus is on nurturing curiosity, confidence and self-understanding.
Japanese company I'mbesideyou Inc. built the solution based on extensive experience and interaction data from services used by 80 percent of Japanese households with children. The system is based around child-centred communication and emphasizes autonomy, emotional safety and age-appropriate engagement.
The AI Coach aims to help address digital inequalities among children by redefining the role of AI in learning and development. Rather than focusing on providing faster answers, the solution emphasizes transferable skills such as critical thinking, emotional regulation, and self-reflection. By prioritizing these foundational abilities, it aims to support children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and promote more equitable learning experiences.
As a software-as-a-service platform, the solution is being scaled across different contexts, currently including English-language deployments in India and the United States. Its confidential structure supports children who may not have access to professional mental health services or trusted mentoring environments. The model can be adapted to different cultural and educational systems, enabling broader inclusion of vulnerable and underserved youth.
Over the past three years, AI Coach for Children has delivered more than 1,500 coaching sessions, achieving a Net Promoter Score of 8 out of 10 and demonstrating strong user satisfaction. The broader service ecosystem reaches 80 percent of Japanese households with children, reflecting significant national trust and penetration.
Following its launch in Japan, the company is expanding into India and the United States, with a particular focus on high school and university students. The next phase includes refining age-specific coaching models, expanding multilingual capabilities and strengthening personalization while maintaining strong privacy safeguards. Technically, the solution will continue to enhance its AI and machine learning models to improve emotional trend analysis and contextual coaching. Expansion will prioritize partnerships with educational institutions and youth-focused organizations to broaden international reach.
